Scholarship Application: Before You Begin

Following this page will be the scholarship application. Please read ALL things listed to make sure you qualify for the NYWICI Scholarship Program.

You are going to be asked to submit: 

  • An essay that responds to 1 of 2 topics specified within the application form
  • A resume
  • 2 letters of recommendation. These can be attached to the application by you (highly recommended), or sent electronically or by mail by the person recommending you.
    • Please note: Recommendation Letters:
      1. If the letter is not on letterhead (strongly preferred), the writer must provide complete contact information. (phone, email, title)
         
      2. one must be from a faculty member from the applicant’s current institution (i.e., someone from whom the applicant has taken a class and can comment on coursework or an academic advisor – the exception is that a freshman can use a letter from a teacher from senior year in HS.

         

      3. second one must be from the applicant’s supervisor for a job, internship or volunteer activity, the applicant’s athletic coach, the academic adviser of an extracurricular activity in which the applicant participates or the instructor from an outside class or course the applicant has taken.
  • A transcript. Unofficial transcripts can be used if your school offers them. Otherwise, you should have your school email a transcript to info@nywici.org, with the subject line: Scholarship Transcript. The transcript must reflect fall grades.

Please note: All files must be received by us by midnight, March 19, 2021.

You will be able to set up a password and start the application, and you will be able to return and log in and add files or adjust answers up until the midnight, March 19, deadline.  

5 Questions to Answer Before You Start

1. Do You Meet the Geographic Eligibility? 

Eligible students are: 

  • U.S. citizens or Permanent Residents who live in NY, NJ, CT, or PA
  • College undergraduate students who are permanent residents of NY, NJ, CT or PA 
  • U.S. citizens or Permanent Residents who do not live in NY, NJ, CT, or PA but who are currently enrolled in a communications program at a college/university in New York state may apply.

2. Do You Meet the GPA Eligiblity?

You must have an overall GPA of 3.2 or better.

3. Are You Applying for Grad School? 

This year, NYWICI is not including grad students in the mix. We hope to revisit that decision next year.

4. Would You Be Available for a Zoom interview in mid-May (exact date TBD)?

Unbreakable Rule: You Must Be Available for an Interview.

For example, if you are spending spring semester abroad, then you must make sure you can compensate for time differences to participate in an interview.

5. If You're Awarded a Scholarship, You Must Be Able to Participate in the Matrix Awards in October. In 2020, the event was virtual, and scholarship winners played a big role.

Unbreakable rule: Winners must participate in the Matrix Awards. If you can't for some reason, you will not be eligible for a scholarship.
